There is absolute silence when the 30 kilowatt magneto-electric motor is switched on. All that can be heard is the muffled sound of a pump. This builds up pressure in the brake system. The automatic transmission is set to D, the foot moves to the accelerator. A quiet whirring can now be heard.[…] The electric motor responds spontaneously to acceleration – after all, unlike petrol engines its torque of 140 Newton metres is immediately available. The acceleration is fully adequate to keep up with the brisk flow of city traffic. The electric smart takes 5.7 seconds to reach 60 km/h.
