Studies have shown that in urban traffic a car comes to a stop every 1.3 km on average – at traffic lights or in a traffic jam. At such times fuel can be saved and emissions reduced.

smart mhd technology intelligently implements an idea that is both simple and brilliant – the automatic start/stop principle: when the vehicle approaches red traffic lights, for example, the micro hybrid drive shuts down the engine as soon as the car falls below a speed of 8 km/h and you press the brake pedal. The engine starts again in the fraction of a second as soon as you release the brake, and the journey can continue without interruption. Fuel savings are maximised by predictive engine shut-down as the car rolls to a stop at a speed of less than 8 km/h. A brilliantly simple fuel-saving idea.



The system has been perfected for the smart fortwo"s automated manual transmission and is fully automatic, i.e. no gear shifting or clutchwork are necessary and you do not have to do anything out of the ordinary – a special control unit does all the work for you. It takes next to no time to get used to the system. And if, for some reason, you don"t want to use the mhd function, simply switch it off with a button. Depending on the traffic situation, fuel consumption in urban traffic is reduced by approximately 20% [1]. Low consumption also means low CO2 emissions. For example, the (combined) CO2 emissions[2] of the smart fortwo coupé 52 KW mhd are now just just 97 g/km – that"s good for you and good for the environment!
